Coffee Country: Coorg vs Chikmagalur

Two misty coffee hills, two very different weekends. A guide to the estate stays, ghat roads, and the highest peak in Karnataka.

Ask ten Bangalore riders where to spend a coffee-country weekend and you'll start an argument. Coorg or Chikmagalur? Both are misty, both smell of fresh roast, and both are a joy on a motorcycle — but they have very different personalities.

Coorg: the polished weekender

Coorg is the crowd-pleaser — curling ghat roads into Madikeri, colonial-era estate stays, Abbey Falls, and elephants at Dubare on the Kaveri. Two easy days of riding wrapped around a plantation homestay. It's the perfect first taste of the hills.

Chikmagalur: the rider's hill

Chikmagalur is wilder and higher. The narrow ridge road up Mullayanagiri — at 1,930 m the highest point in Karnataka — needs concentration and pays you back with a summit view over a sea of ranges. Baba Budangiri and the waterfalls around it make it a proper riding weekend rather than a gentle one.

Coorg is where you fall for coffee country. Chikmagalur is where you ride it properly.

Either works October to March. Go Coorg to relax, Chikmagalur to ride.
