If Ladakh is the deep end, Kashmir is the perfect place to learn to swim. The valley is greener, lower, and gentler, but the scenery is every bit as alpine — and the Zoji La gives you a real taste of a Himalayan pass without the extreme altitude.
Start on the water
A night on a Dal Lake houseboat and a dawn shikara through the floating gardens set the tone. From Srinagar the riding opens into the meadows of Gulmarg, where the gondola climbs toward Apharwat, and the alpine bowl of Sonamarg — the 'meadow of gold'.
The Zoji La
The climb toward the Zoji La is the valley's wildest road — narrow, streaming with meltwater, and framed by snow walls into early summer. It is the gateway between Kashmir's green and Ladakh's high desert, and riding to the top and back is the highlight of the trip.
Kashmir doesn't shout. It just quietly turns out to be the most beautiful valley you've ever ridden.
Best season
May to October is the window. Pack a warm layer for the meadows and the pass whatever the calendar says — mountain weather here changes by the hour.
